- Résumé
- This thesis focuses on the Ottoman administration in North Africa during the first half of the 17th century, the golden age of corsairs. It examines the relationships between the North African provinces and the Ottoman Empire, and that of the Ottoman Empire and Venice through the “Relazione” written by dragoman Giovanni Battista Salvago, during his mission to rescue the Venetian captives in Barbaria in 1624. After describing the political and military situation in Tunisia and Algeria, it gives detailed information on the administrative positions and the power relations in these provinces. Then it proceeds to narrate the same aspects through Salvago’s text. Similarly, Salvago and the incident he experienced are traced through the Ottoman documents. As a conclusion, these documents are compared for a multi-dimensional interpretation of the relations between North African provinces - Ottoman Empire - Venice.
